In our fast-paced lives, burnout can creep up unnoticed. It begins subtly with persistent tiredness, disillusionment, and overwhelming stress. To prevent burnout, the key is learning to consistently “fill your cup”—in other words, to recharge emotionally, mentally, and physically before you’re drained.
1. Complete the Stress Cycle
Stress doesn’t disappear on its own, and unresolved stress can lead to burnout. Emily and Amelia Nagoski’s book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle explains that our bodies hold on to stress until we complete the biological “stress cycle.” Activities like exercise, deep breathing, or even laughter help signal to your brain that you’re safe and the stress has passed. Simple activities, such as walking outside or connecting with a loved one, can help you break free from the cycle of stress.
2. Set Boundaries and Prioritise Rest
Preventing burnout requires rest and knowing when to say no. The Nagoskis’ research highlights the importance of adequate rest in terms of sleep and how we structure our work and downtime. Scheduling regular breaks and “micro-recoveries” throughout the day can protect your mental and emotional well-being.
3. Practise Self-Compassion
Internal pressures often exacerbate burnout. Many high-achievers tend to push themselves relentlessly. In addition to managing external stressors, practising self-compassion—treating yourself with the same kindness you’d offer a friend—can alleviate the self-imposed stress that leads to burnout. Dr. Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion provides practical exercises to foster this mindset shift, which in turn helps you recover from and prevent burnout.
