Make yourself visible: why uploading your CV to job boards still matters

Discover how uploading your CV to job boards boosts visibility with recruiters & why many UK employers prefer them over premium platforms.

Many job-seekers focus on networking or premium platforms (such as LinkedIn Premium) and overlook one enduring channel: job boards. Here’s why job boards remain a smart element in your job-search strategy.

Why job boards work

    • A job board is a website or platform where employers (or recruitment agencies) post active vacancies and candidates can browse and apply, or register/upload their CV.
    • For recruiters and employers, job boards provide immediate access to large volumes of applicants and are a quick way to build visibility.
    • Uploading your CV increases your “passive” visibility: you may appear in searches even when you haven’t applied directly, meaning you might be discovered by a recruiter rather than just responding to a job.
    • Some employers favour job boards over more expensive platforms or direct agency listings. [Inference] Because job boards often operate on a lower cost-per-post or lower overhead, this means more recruitment activity is channelled through them.
    • Job boards give you another “front door” into the market. If you rely only on one channel (say LinkedIn) you may miss roles posted elsewhere.

How to use job boards effectively

    1. Register, upload your CV, set job alerts. Don’t just browse. Complete your profile, add keywords and skills relevant to your target roles.
    1. Tailor your CV for search. Use keywords that recruiters search for (e.g. “customer success”, “technical support”, “retail management”). This helps match your CV to searches.
    1. Keep the CV up to date. Refresh it every few weeks so you appear active. If the CV has a “last updated” date recruiters may view it more favourably.
    1. Use alerts and filters. Set up customised job alerts (by role, sector, location) so you get notified as soon as new roles appear.
    1. Apply promptly. When a good job appears, apply early. Also use the job board’s “upload your CV” or “save your profile” feature so you’re visible for related roles.
    1. Monitor multiple boards. Some roles are posted only on niche or industry-specific job boards rather than the big general ones.
    1. Check the board’s reputation. Some postings may be stale or never really intended to be filled.

A quick check: is your job-board strategy sound?

    • Have you uploaded your CV to at least two major job boards?
    • Do you have job alerts configured for your target role, industry and location?
    • Have you reviewed and updated your CV in the last month?
    • Are keywords aligned to your target roles (matching your industry/level)?
    • Are you tracking your job board applications and recruiter contacts?
