Every summer, the same belief resurfaces in my coaching conversations: “There’s no point applying now — nobody hires until September.” It feels true. Inboxes go quiet, decision-makers are on annual leave, and the LinkedIn feed slows to a trickle.
But here’s what’s actually happening, and why that belief could be costing you your next role.
Cautious isn’t the same as closed
The 2026 market is undeniably tighter. UK vacancies have fallen to around 705,000, the lowest level since 2021, and there are now roughly 2.6 candidates competing for every vacancy. Hiring has slowed — but it hasn’t stopped. It’s become more selective, more strategic, and often slower, with the average time to hire climbing to around 12 weeks.
That last figure is the one to sit with. If hiring takes twelve weeks, the roles that get filled in September and October are being worked on now — through summer. Disengaging in July doesn’t pause the market; it just removes you from it at the exact moment competitors are doing the same.
The summer paradox: less noise, same opportunity
There’s a quieter, more encouraging signal underneath the headlines too. A remarkable 84% of UK workers say they’re open to a new opportunity — the highest figure on record — but most are passively open rather than actively applying. In other words, the people you’re competing against are largely waiting. The active applicant pool thins out over summer even as employers keep quietly working their pipelines. Totaljobs
Fewer people in the queue, the same number of roles being worked on. That’s not a slowdown for you. That’s a gap in the market.
Where the summer opportunities actually are
It also helps to know where hiring is holding up. Demand for temporary and contract staff is strengthening — temporary vacancies recently returned to growth for the first time in 22 months. And the structural shift continues: 83% of UK employers now prioritise workplace skills over formal qualifications, which means the summer weeks you spend closing a genuine skills gap can directly change your prospects in autumn. Your move: a 30-minute summer strategy audit
Rather than waiting for September, treat the quiet weeks as preparation time. I break this into four areas — reframe and reset, refresh your LinkedIn, warm your network, and fix one skills gap (AI literacy being the standout right now). Half an hour a week, worked consistently through July and August, leaves you visibly ahead when hiring picks up.
I’ve turned that exact process into a free downloadable checklist — The Summer Strategy Audit — which you can work through at your own pace.
The bottom line
The summer slowdown is real for the people who believe in it. For everyone else, it’s the most strategic window of the year: less competition, more thinking time, and a market that’s still quietly hiring. Don’t switch off. Position yourself.
